A researcher operating under the handle "Nightmare Eclipse" has publicly released a zero-day exploit dubbed FalconFlank, targeting CrowdStrike's Falcon Sensor endpoint protection agent. The exploit lets a local attacker escalate privileges to SYSTEM on fully updated Windows systems — turning the very security tool meant to stop attackers into the mechanism that hands them the keys.
What FalconFlank Does
FalconFlank abuses the Office malicious macro remediation feature built into Falcon Sensor. In the researcher's own words, it is "a 0day privilege escalation that abuses the office malicious macros remediation in Crowdstrike Falcon Sensor," which can be leveraged to spawn a command prompt running with SYSTEM-level privileges.

Not a One-Off
This isn't Nightmare Eclipse's first release. Since April 2026, the same researcher has published multiple zero-days targeting security software from other major vendors, including:

Why This Matters
Falcon Sensor runs with deep kernel-level access on the endpoints it protects, which is exactly why a privilege-escalation flaw in its remediation logic is significant: an attacker who already has low-privileged local code execution — via phishing, a malicious document, or another initial-access vector — can use FalconFlank to jump straight to SYSTEM, bypassing normal Windows privilege boundaries entirely.
