Executive Summary

A critical command injection vulnerability (CVE-2026-71984) has been disclosed in the MSI Radix AXE6600 tri-band Wi-Fi 6E gaming router. The flaw resides in the urlfilter function — the router's URL filtering and parental control subsystem — and allows remote attackers to inject and execute arbitrary operating system commands with root privileges.

Root Cause

The MSI Radix AXE6600's URL filtering functionality — used for blocking websites and enforcing parental controls — processes user-supplied input and passes it unsanitized to underlying shell commands. Attackers can inject shell metacharacters into the affected parameters to break out of the intended command context and execute arbitrary code with root privileges.

This class of vulnerability (OS command injection via unsanitized CGI/web parameters) is well-understood and should be addressed at the firmware development stage through proper input validation and the use of parameterized command execution rather than string concatenation.

Why URL Filtering Functions Are High-Risk Targets

URL filtering and parental control subsystems process external, user-controlled strings (URLs, domains) by design. When these strings flow into shell commands without sanitization, any input containing characters like ;, |, $(), or backticks can redirect command execution. This makes URL-handling code a frequent target for injection attacks on embedded devices.

A successful exploit allows the attacker to:

  • Execute arbitrary commands as root on the MSI Radix AXE6600
  • Intercept and modify all network traffic (man-in-the-middle)
