Classic Look Returns to New Outlook
Microsoft has begun rolling out a Classic Outlook theme for users of Outlook on the web and the New Outlook for Windows, offering a familiar visual experience for users who preferred the look and feel of the legacy Outlook desktop client.
The gradual rollout addresses one of the most common complaints from users who were migrated — or encouraged to migrate — to the New Outlook experience, which adopted a modern, simplified interface that many long-time users found unfamiliar or stripped of customization options.
What Changes with the Classic Theme
The Classic Outlook theme restores several visual and layout elements associated with the legacy Outlook desktop application, including:
| Element | Classic Theme |
|---|---|
| Colour Scheme | Familiar blue-grey tones reminiscent of Outlook 2019/2021 |
| Ribbon Layout | More compact, tab-based navigation |
| Reading Pane | Traditional panel layout |
| Folder Tree | Familiar left-side navigation structure |
| Icons | Aligned with legacy Outlook iconography |
The theme does not restore all legacy functionality — it is primarily a visual and UX skin that sits on top of the New Outlook architecture. Features removed during the transition to New Outlook (such as certain COM add-in support) remain absent.
Background: The New Outlook Transition
Microsoft began pushing users toward New Outlook for Windows as part of its broader strategy to unify the Outlook experience across Windows, macOS, web, and mobile. New Outlook is built on a web-based foundation (similar to Outlook.com), replacing the legacy Win32 application that had been the enterprise email standard for decades.
The transition has been controversial. Enterprise users and IT administrators raised concerns including:
- Missing features — certain advanced rules, COM add-ins, and calendar tools absent in early New Outlook releases
- Performance — web-based architecture initially perceived as slower than the native Win32 client
- UX disruption — unfamiliar interface reduced productivity for power users
- Privacy concerns — New Outlook processes email data through Microsoft's cloud backend, raising questions for regulated industries
Microsoft has gradually addressed many of these concerns through feature parity updates, and the Classic theme rollout appears to be another step in easing user transition.
How to Enable the Classic Theme
Once available to your account, the Classic theme can be activated via Outlook's appearance settings:
- Open Outlook on the web or New Outlook for Windows
- Click the Settings gear icon (top right)
- Navigate to Appearance or Theme
- Select Classic from the available theme options
- Apply and reload
Availability is rolling out gradually and may not yet be visible to all users. Microsoft has not specified a date by which the option will reach all tenants.
Rollout Scope
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| Outlook on the web | Rolling out |
| New Outlook for Windows | Rolling out |
| New Outlook for macOS | Not confirmed |
| Outlook Mobile (iOS/Android) | Not applicable |
What This Means for IT Admins
Organizations managing Microsoft 365 tenants should note:
- The Classic theme is a per-user preference and does not change backend email routing, data processing, or policy enforcement
- No administrative action is required to enable or block the theme — it surfaces as a user-facing appearance option
- This change does not affect Exchange Online configuration or compliance settings
- IT teams receiving user complaints about the New Outlook interface may wish to point users to this option once it becomes available in their tenant
