Overview
OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a model focused on computer use, visual reasoning, coding and everyday work. OpenAI describes it as "a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use," aimed at tasks such as filling out forms, editing video, interpreting technical drawings and automating repetitive desktop work.
Pricing and Speed
- Price: $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol
- Speed: completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol
Reported Benchmarks
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Agents' Last Exam (medium effort) | 15 points above GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost |
| Internal error rate, low effort | 53.6% down to 16.7% |
| Internal error rate, max effort | Down to 4.3% |
| Terminal-Bench 4.0 (max effort) | 50.3% versus 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra |
OpenAI says it performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the per-token price. These are vendor-reported figures. For the most complex coding work, OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.
Availability
GPT-6.1 Terra is available now to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and through the API as gpt-6.1-terra.
Security Considerations
Cheaper, faster computer-use agents make it practical to run more of them with broader access to desktops and internal tools. Teams adopting them should apply least-privilege credentials, sandbox agent sessions, log agent actions, and treat web content an agent reads as untrusted input, since prompt injection remains a live risk for agentic tools.
