Summary

CISA has added CVE-2026-41709, a flaw in Broadcom VMware ESX/ESXi, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog after CrowdStrike reported that the China-nexus actor Warp Panda weaponized it as a zero-day in early 2026. Federal civilian agencies must apply fixes by November 11, 2026.

The Vulnerability

CVE-2026-41709 is an insufficient logging issue with a low CVSS score of 2.7. An attacker who already has administrative access can perform certain operations on the hypervisor without those actions being recorded. The score understates its operational value: it lets intruders hide activity on the very platform that hosts critical workloads.

Broadcom patched the flaw in its July 2026 advisory. Fixed builds include:

ProductFixed Version
VMware Cloud Foundation / vSphere Foundation (9.x)SXi-9.1.0.0-25370933 and ESXi-9.0.2.0100-25595025
VMware ESX 8.0ESXi80U3j-25429389
VMware Cloud Foundation 5.25.2.4
VMware Telco Cloud PlatformESXi80U3j-25429389

The Threat Actor

Warp Panda is also tracked as Armory Castle (formerly UNC5221), Clay Typhoon, and VerdantBamboo. According to CrowdStrike's 2026 Legal Threat Landscape Report, the group:

  • Targeted U.S. entities, particularly the legal sector
  • Gains initial access through internet-facing edge devices, then pivots to VMware vCenter environments
  • Maintains persistence with custom malware including BRICKSTORM and SharpStorm
  • Bypasses audit logging, harvests cloud session tokens to reach Microsoft 365 without triggering credential alerts, and registers rogue MFA devices to survive password resets

The group has a history of zero-day exploitation against Citrix NetScaler and Ivanti Connect Secure. Mandiant separately linked it to exploitation of BeyondTrust Remote Support (CVE-2026-102764, CVSS 9.3), which delivered SAWFLY and BARECLAW malware.

  1. Patch ESX/ESXi to the fixed builds above; federal agencies have until November 11, 2026.
  2. Forward hypervisor and vCenter logs off-host to a SIEM so a local logging gap cannot erase evidence.
  3. Hunt for BRICKSTORM and unexpected persistence on vCenter and edge appliances.
  4. Audit Microsoft 365 for rogue MFA registrations and anomalous session-token use, especially in legal and professional-services tenants.
  5. Restrict administrative access to ESX and vCenter to dedicated management networks with MFA.
