Overview

OpenAI is rolling ChatGPT Work capabilities into regular Chat and combining usage allowances across ChatGPT and Codex, according to an email to subscribers seen by BleepingComputer.

What's Changing

  • Combined Chat and Work experience. OpenAI will test it "in the coming weeks" with a small group before expanding. Testers can move from ordinary conversation to more complex tasks without switching modes, bringing in files and plugins and asking ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or act on the web.
  • Codex stays separate. It remains its own experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.
  • One shared allowance. Per the email: "Your use of ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same allowance." More advanced models and complex tasks consume more of it.
  • Unlimited Instant is included with the subscription and does not count toward the shared limit.
  • Usage tracking. Combined remaining usage and reset times appear under Settings > Usage.
  • At the limit, users can wait for the reset, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.

Higher Limits

Work and Codex allowances were already doubled for the Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 subscriptions, effective October 29.

Why It Matters for Security Teams

Merging agentic task execution (files, plugins, web actions) into the default chat surface widens what a single conversation can reach. Organizations should review which plugins and file sources are enabled, how connectors are scoped, and whether usage policies cover the combined experience once it reaches their accounts.
